The exhibit now on display in Martin Methodist College’s Barton Art Gallery features the work of three “outsider” artists from Hickman County.

The Outsider Art Exhibit – focusing on the work of Ananda Fuller, Randy Toy and LuAnn Toy – will be on display through March 30 and will include a gallery talk at 7 p.m., Monday, March 5.

The Barton Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Gault Fine Arts Center on the Martin Methodist College campus.

“The term ‘Outsider Artists’ has come into common use only recently,” said Bernice Davidson, assistant professor of art and curator of the Barton Gallery. “It is also known as folk, naïve, primitive and intuitive art. These terms describe work done by non-professional artists.”

Davidson has found neighboring Hickman County as a hotbed for many of these self-trained artists, including the three artists whose work is on display. There are also three pieces of early American folk art from the collection of Rose Palermo of Nashville.

In addition to being talented artists, the husband-wife team of Randy and LuAnn Toy are also the parents of Cofie Toy, a junior at Martin Methodist College.
