While the competition was fierce, little Aberdeen, a pup from the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Animal Shelter, won Puppy Bowl VIII’s Viewer Choice Most Valuable Puppy Poll.
The event aired on Animal Planet opposite the Super Bowl.
Aberdeen and another pup, Abilene, from the local shelter were selected to appear in Puppy Bowl 2012 from a few thousand entries. Both Australian shepherd mixes about 10 weeks old, the pups and their siblings had been left abandoned in the shelter’s drop pens.
They were entered into the competition by the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Animal Shelter in partnership with the shelter’s friends at the Sullivan County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPAC) as part of the SAILing effort. SAILing (Saving An Innocent Life) is a program by which shelter volunteers make a monthly transport of pups and adult dogs, oftentimes in conjunction with other shelters such as the Sullivan County SPAC, to Virginia, halfway to the rescue in New York. The program has saved the lives of more than 1,560 animals locally.
